The interest for research dissemination, research utilization and the interplayof science and society has increased significantly in the passed years. Therehave been many attempts to develop the contact of universities with the rest ofsociety. However we have to acknowledge that we are rather ignorant as far asthese efforts are concerned. Are we doing the right things? Is there a mutualexchange of experiences and problems? What effects are achieved, in the longand the short run? Are they worth while? What does the learning process looklike to different professionals and what do the incentives for knowledge see-king look like to them? Today there is a lack of solid theories of knowledgetransfer between research and practice and there is a need to develop goodforms and methods. In this article I discuss a variety of challenging researchquestions concerning all the activities, and sometime the lack of activities, thatin one way or another focus on an increased interplay between universitiesand society. In order to enlighten these questions a research programme – TheInterplay of Science and Practice – has been initiated by Novemus at ÖrebroUniversity in collaboration with Dalarna Research Institute.
