LEARNING TO CARE ABOUT THOSE CLOSE TO US – AND THOSE FAR AWAY. This articlediscusses education for sustainable development, taking a proposal fromStefan Edman as its starting point. A gender perspective makes visible twoobstacles to implementing Edman’s proposal, which calls for the subjecthome economics and consumer studies to form the core of education forsustainable development in schools. These obstacles lie in a failure to relatesustainable development, first, to gender equality, and second, and follow-ing from the first, to education about and for home and family life. Thearticle ends with a discussion of the challenges schools will face as they tryto develop new, gender-sensitive ways of thinking about education forsustainable development.
