Abstract: According to Montherlant and Sartre, the character trait terms that we use to describe ourselves and other people should not be understood to designate properties that determine behaviour in given situations. A person’s essence includes character traits incline that person towards certain types of behaviour but do not determine that behaviour. Montherlant realizes that, no matter how much one may experience, there is always something which escapes him, leaving his desires unsatisfied.
