Abstract: ABSTRACT. Institutions in democratic societies will better serve the public if they operate in accordance with democratically determined ethical principles (Thompson). From our understanding of instrumental relations among both animate and inanimate things, we have a sense of what it is to treat someone merely as a means (Audi). Rawls assumes that a democratic society is to be viewed as a complete and closed social system.
