Abstract: ABSTRACT. Merleau-Ponty claims that the phenomenal field places a fundamental difficulty in the way of any attempt to make experience directly and totally explicit. Sklar holds that the explanatory and predictive methods of science constitute a diverse plurality; science itself declares the continuous fluids of hydrodynamics to be merely “useful fictions”. Sklar speaks of flowing fluids as continuous media.
