Abstract: Dewey reinforces Rousseau's childcentredness with the Baconian thought that what the child should be centring on are problems and practice. Education is a thoroughly classical concept, which since the time of Socrates and Aristotle has never entirely disappeared in institutions of learning. Education should involve the formation of habits of behaviour and learning, habits which are not in any obvious sense natural.
