Abstract: Plato and Rousseau were at one in seeing education as part of an overarching political and social project. In the Republic, Plato is concerned with educating people in such a way that a just society is the outcome. Rousseau's work can be seen as the start of a pervasive interest in the details of child development in educational thought. Comenius' philosophy aimed at a grandiose reform of pedagogy in the spirit of modern didactic realism.
